                              Gloucester's Annual

Shakespeare on Avon Festival

12th Anniversary

The 2010 Shakespeare on Avon Festival will be held on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th May at Gloucester Recreation Grounds – within walking distance of the CBD. The site offers plenty of parking and disabled access.

Saturday's activities  consist of live music, fair, markets, jesting and jousting, from 9am and runs throughout the day until mid- afternoon.

                            The 2010 performance will be
               "A Midsummer Night's Dream"

Stooged Theatre will again be presenting the performance, and has chosen “A Midsummer Night's Dream” as the preferred play. Carl Young, Stooged Theatre principal, director and actor, has provided the material below to give us an indication of what lies in store!

Even in 1983, the course of true love never did run smooth.....

On the evening of Theseus' wedding to Hippolyta, the mortal and fairy worlds collide out in the Australian bush in Stooged Theatre's exciting adaptation of one of the bard's best loved comedies.

Oberon, the fairy king and Titania, his queen, are fighting over a slave child.  Oberon hatches a plan to use a flower which, when applied to one's eyes, makes you fall in love with the next thing you see.  What could possibly go wrong?

Set against the backdrop of 1983 (the music! the memories! the horrific fashion sense!)  four young lovers escape the confines of the city and get lost in the woods.  When the prankster fairy Puck starts using the love flower left, right and centre an epic love battle begins.

Meanwhile, the egotistical Nick Bottom tries to prepare his new wave band "The Mechanicals” for their audition to entertain the wedding guests. Unfortunately they are not very good, and decide to rehearse out in the forest. It’s here that Bottom takes the expression “being an ass” to the next level, and the real fun begins!
